Celebrate National Ice Cream Day With Your Kids and Pets!

Finding new and creative ways to entertain kids while they’re on summer break can be a challenge, that’s why we came up with a few ice cream themed activities that kids (and pets) are sure to love. National Ice Cream Day is on July 21st and we cannot resist celebrating!

First, create the base for your ice cream treats by following the simple recipe below:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1.5 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Materials:

  • 2–3 cups ice, crushed or cubed
  • 1/3 cup kosher or coarse salt
  • 1 quart-sized plastic ziplock bag
  • 1 gallon-sized plastic ziplock freezer bag

Instructions:

  1. Combine milk, vanilla, and sugar in the small plastic bag. Seal the bag tightly, making sure to press out any air trapped inside the bag.
  2. Mix ice and salt in the gallon-sized plastic bag.
  3. Place the small bag into the large plastic bag and seal tightly.
  4. Shake the bag vigorously for about 5 minutes. You might need to wear gloves as the bag will be very cold.
  5. After about 5 minutes, you will see that the liquid inside the smaller bag has hardened. Without opening the bags, let them sit on a plate or towel for another few minutes, move the ice in the larger bag so that it surrounds the smaller bag.
  6. Open both bags and scoop out the ice cream from inside the small bag. Serve immediately.

Now the real entertainment begins! Below, is a list of five activities kids are sure to love:

  1. Make a batch of ice cream base per person and see who can freeze theirs the fastest.
  2. Make a few variations to the base recipe and do a blind taste test to determine the tastiest way to make it!
    • For extra-creamy ice cream: use half-and-half instead of milk
    • Try different amounts of sugar and vanilla
    • For dairy-free ice cream: use coconut milk instead of cow’s milk
  3. Try creative flavors like:
    • Banana split swirl: Mix 1 cup chopped banana, ½ cup chopped toasted walnuts and ½ cup chopped maraschino cherries into chocolate ice cream. To make chocolate ice cream, add chocolate sauce to your ice cream base before freezing.
    • Cereal and milk: Crumble 1 ¼ cup of Fruit Loops or other flavorful cereal into vanilla ice cream.
    • PB&J Swirl: Stir together ⅓ cup peanut butter, 2 tbsp sugar and ¼ cup milk until smooth. Mix ⅔ cup grape jelly into vanilla ice cream, and swirl in peanut butter sauce.

  4. Good old fashioned sundae bar!
    • Set up small dishes of mix-ins and let kids mix their own creative flavors
  5. Include your dog in the celebration with popsicles for your furry friend!
    • Use a regular popsicle mold or bowl, add chicken broth, treat chunks, or peanut butter and freeze.
